Set your band by how often you play, not by the carbon grade. Each band buys a different class of build.

Surface material - fibreglass, carbon and T700
The face sets the ceiling on spin. The carbon grade matters as much as the word "carbon".
- Fibreglass. Soft and forgiving, with the least spin. Normal under ₹2,000.
- T300 or 3K carbon. Crisper than fibreglass, but a step below T700 at the same price.
- Toray T700 raw carbon. The rough, unlacquered face grips the ball hardest for spin.
Raw carbon grit wears down with play. When a paddle stops gripping, it is worn out even if it looks fine.

Thermoformed versus standard construction
Construction decides how long a paddle plays like new. The build generation matters more than the marketing.
- Standard. Face and edge are assembled separately. Most budget listings do not state a build at all.
- Thermoformed. Moulded as one piece under heat and pressure, for fewer dead spots near the edge.
- Foam walls. Foam around the perimeter widens the sweet spot and supports the edge.
- Full foam. A solid foam core with no honeycomb to crush, as on the Xyros and UltraVolt.

Weight and handle length
Handle length matters more in India than marketing suggests. Most players arrive from tennis or badminton and hit two-handed backhands.
- Handle. 5.25 inches or more makes a two-handed backhand comfortable.
- "Grip size" fields. A "5.5 inch grip" is almost always the handle. A real grip circumference is 4 to 4.25 inches.
- Weight. 215-240 g is the all-court band. Lighter is quicker at the net; heavier drives deeper.
Lead tape can add weight later, but nothing takes it away.

Know what actually breaks
Budget paddles fail at the handle and edge guard. Thermoformed carbon fails by core crush and edge separation, usually at two to six months.
- Core crush. The honeycomb collapses, and The Dink's core-crush guide explains the paddle hits harder before it goes dead.
- Edge separation. A lifting edge guard is an early sign of the face coming away, which a retailer's delamination explainer ties to dead spots.
- Warranty. These failures land inside a year, so a one-year warranty is worth more than a fancier face.

Tournament certification
Approval matters only if you play sanctioned events. Then the paddle must be on the official list, whatever its title says.
- The rule. The 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook requires sanctioned players to use a listed paddle.
- Listed here. We checked every claim against the USA Pickleball approved paddle list. The Takumi, UltraVolt, Elytra and Xtrieve are on it.
- Claimed, not listed. The athletiq SpinX and VEGA say "USAPA Approved" but are not listed.
"Built to USAPA standards" means nothing at all.

Read the review count and dates before the star rating
A 4.6 across twenty reviews spread over a year beats a 5.0 from three buyers in one week.
- Tiny counts. Many Indian paddle listings show a perfect 5.0 on one to four reviews, often from one launch week.
- Foreign ratings. Big international brands show hundreds of ratings with almost none from India.
- Our approach. We pull a thin record toward the category average rather than reward it.

Sweet spot, grip and paddle care
Spin and comfort depend on details listings skip. Check these before and after you buy.
- Printed sweet spot. A logo printed across the middle of the face creates a smooth patch and uneven spin.
- Grip too small. You squeeze harder to stop the paddle twisting, which loads the forearm. An overgrip is a cheap fix.
- Care. Wipe the face with a damp cloth after play to clear ball residue, and use a cover.
