How to choose a smart speaker

• Check the assistant actually works in India before anything else

  This is the single biggest trap in this category and it costs real money. Sonos speakers on amazon.in are sold under titles like "Smart Speaker with WiFi, Bluetooth, Amazon Alexa" — but read down the same listing and you will find "Please note: Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are not available in your region." A verified Indian buyer of the Sonos Era 300 describes Alexa working for one month, then stopping, then being told by Sonos support in the US that Alexa is simply not supported on Sonos in India. At ₹22,999 to ₹44,999 that turns an expensive smart speaker into an expensive Bluetooth speaker. The pattern is tied to grey imports: these units show Country of Origin USA or Malaysia and are brought in by a third-party importer rather than the brand's Indian arm. Before buying any non-Amazon smart speaker, scroll the full feature bullet list for a region notice, and check whether the importer is the manufacturer's own Indian subsidiary. JBL Authentics models pass this test — they are imported and warrantied by Harman International (India) Pvt Ltd and their assistants work. You do not have to take the buyer reports on faith either: Sonos publishes its own list of countries where Amazon Alexa is available on Sonos, and India does not appear on it.

• Do not trust the star rating — look at what recent buyers say

  Star ratings in this category are averages over years of sales, and in several cases they badly misrepresent what you would experience buying today. The Echo Dot 5th Gen shows 4.1★ across 13,200 ratings, which looks reassuring. But of its 50 most recent verified reviews from India, 28 are one or two stars — 56%, against a lifetime figure of 13%. The Echo Pop shows the same pattern at 44% recent versus 10% lifetime, and the Echo 4th Gen at 38% versus 6%. None of these are review-manipulation cases; the reviews are genuine and spread naturally over months. The lifetime average is simply dominated by older, happier buyers. When you research any product in this category, sort reviews by "Most recent", filter to Verified Purchase, and read the last thirty. If the recent picture looks nothing like the star rating, believe the recent picture.

• Decide first whether you are buying a speaker or a smart-home hub

  These are two different purchases and almost no product does both well. If you want a device that controls smart bulbs, switches, fans and sensors directly, you need built-in hub radios — Zigbee, Thread and Matter. Critically, no JBL Authentics speaker at any price — not even the ₹49,999 flagship — has any hub radio at all. They respond to Alexa and Google commands but every hub-dependent device still needs separate hardware. Conversely, if you mainly want something that sounds good, the JBL line is in a different league: the Authentics 200 at ₹26,999 has a 5-inch woofer, twin tweeters and a passive radiator in true stereo, where the best Echo under ₹20,000 manages a 3-inch woofer and two 0.8-inch tweeters. Buying the wrong side of this split is the most common mistake in the category. Once you know which side you are on, the reviews below are ordered so you can skip straight to it — the sub-₹10,000 Echo range where the hub radios live, or the JBL Authentics line where the drivers do.

• Understand what "smart" costs you after purchase

  Two ongoing costs surprise Indian buyers. The first is music. Several verified Echo Pop and Echo Dot owners report that voice-requested songs play incorrectly, get substituted between JioSaavn, Spotify and Amazon Music, or return a "reached limit" message unless you hold a paid subscription. • Match driver hardware to the room, and watch the volume curve

  Driver configuration predicts real-world performance better than any marketing claim. A single full-range mono driver — the Echo Pop's 1.95 inch or the Echo Dot 5th Gen's 1.73 inch — is genuinely fine on a bedside table or a small kitchen counter and genuinely inadequate for a living room; Indian reviewers of both say exactly this, with one noting that volume 10 "feels like a 7". A dedicated woofer plus tweeter, as in the Echo 4th Gen or Echo Dot Max, fills a normal bedroom. For a living room you want a real stereo array with a passive radiator, which starts with the JBL Authentics 200. Separately, watch for a broken volume curve — a fault that no spec sheet reveals. Multiple Echo Dot 5th Gen owners report that the speaker is inaudible below about 30% volume and then abruptly too loud at 40%, with muffled output in between. Distortion ceilings matter too: Echo 4th Gen owners consistently report clean sound up to roughly 60-70% volume and harshness above it.

• Buy in a sale, and check the manufacture date when it arrives

If your purchase is not urgent, waiting for Great Indian Festival, Prime Day or Republic Day sales is worth several thousand rupees. One caution when the box arrives: because several of these are older designs still in distribution, old stock circulates. One verified buyer in July 2026 received an Echo 4th Gen manufactured in April 2023, and another reports receiving what appeared to be a used or refurbished unit with a discoloured cable. Check the manufacture date on the box and the condition of the accessories immediately, while the return window is open.
