Hard Water 101: What It Really Does to Your Appliances

Hard water is just dissolved calcium and magnesium — but that mineral load decides whether your geyser element scales up, how much detergent you burn, and whether a ₹30,000 softener is worth it. This page works from USGS, WHO, the Indian BIS standard and a US Department of Energy study, not appliance-brand marketing.

The short version

Hard water is dissolved calcium and magnesium, measured in mg/L as calcium carbonate. Above roughly 120 mg/L it starts leaving scale on anything that heats or dries the water — geyser elements, kettles, taps, washing-machine drums. It is safe to drink; the damage is to appliances, laundry and comfort, not to your health.

THE ONE THING MOST GUIDES GET WRONG

The scary "hard water cuts appliance life 40 to 60%" figures are not backed by any reliable study. In the US Department of Energy analysis of the Battelle test data, hard water did not reduce the efficiency or tank life of electric storage geysers at all — only the heating element wears faster.4 Since electric storage geysers are what most Indian homes use, the real fix is descaling the element, not panic.

What hard water actually is

Rain falls soft. As it moves through soil and rock, it dissolves calcium and magnesium — mostly from limestone and chalk — and picks up "hardness". The US Geological Survey defines hardness as the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in water, reported in milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate (mg/L as CaCO3).1 That is the same number Indians loosely call ppm.

USGS and WHO use one settled scale. It is not the vague "300+ is hard" rule you see on filter ads — the real thresholds are lower.

THE MYTH: "MY TDS METER MEASURES HARDNESS"

It does not. A TDS meter reads all dissolved solids — sodium, chloride, sulphates and nitrates included — none of which add to hardness. Hardness is only the calcium and magnesium part.1 Two supplies with the same TDS can have very different hardness. A TDS number is a rough hint; a hardness strip or a lab titration is the real measurement.

How hard is India's water?

It varies enormously — even between two borewells on the same street — so there is no single national number worth quoting. Hardness tends to be highest in arid and semi-arid groundwater and over limestone or hard-rock terrain, and lowest in high-rainfall coastal and hill areas. Municipal supply is often treated and moderate; borewell and tanker water is where very hard readings show up.

THE INDIAN STANDARD: BIS IS 10500:2012

India's drinking-water standard sets total hardness (as CaCO3) with an acceptable limit of 200 mg/L and a permissible limit of 600 mg/L that applies only when no alternate source is available.3 Above 600, the supply should be rejected for drinking. The older 1991 edition allowed 300 mg/L as acceptable, so the bar has tightened.

The practical point: national maps and "Rajasthan is 800 ppm" style claims are too coarse to act on, and the per-state figures floating around online are rarely traceable to a primary source. The only number that matters is your own tap's — so test it (section 06) before spending anything.

What scale actually does to appliances

When hard water is heated or left to evaporate, calcium carbonate drops out of solution and cements onto hot surfaces as limescale. That chalky crust is the real mechanism behind almost every hard-water complaint. But the size of the damage is routinely exaggerated — here is what the evidence actually shows.

GEYSERS — ELECTRIC STORAGE (MOST INDIAN HOMES)

Tank is fine; the element suffers

The US DOE / PNNL analysis of the Battelle test found hard water did not reduce the efficiency or tank lifetime of electric storage water heaters. Only the heating element has a shorter life, because scale bakes onto it and makes it run hotter.4 Descaling or replacing the element restores performance.

GEYSERS — GAS STORAGE & TANKLESS

Modest, but real, efficiency loss

Gas storage heaters lost about 3 percentage points of efficiency (70.4% to 67.4%) over two years of hard water. Gas tankless units scaled fastest — 80% down to 72% in 1.6 years, then clogged, and descaling only brought them back to 77%.4 Tankless and gas units genuinely need periodic descaling.

WASHING MACHINES & DISHWASHERS

More soap, stiffer laundry

Hard water reacts with soap to form scum instead of lather, so you use more detergent for the same result and clothes can feel stiff. Scale also builds on heating elements and in pipes. Soft water improves laundry and washing, which is one reason softeners are sold.9

KETTLES, TAPS & SHOWERHEADS

Where you actually see it first

The white crust in your kettle, the chalky ring on taps and the blocked showerhead holes are all limescale. They are cosmetic and easily descaled with vinegar or citric acid, but they are the most reliable everyday signal that your water is hard.

READ THE EFFICIENCY NUMBERS IN CONTEXT

The Battelle study was funded by the Water Quality Association — the water-softener trade body — and used deliberately severe, very-hard test water (around 440 mg/L for the tankless run).4 The figures are real and reported in a neutral US Department of Energy report, but they are a worst case, not a typical Indian municipal supply. Treat them as an upper bound.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. WHO proposes no health-based guideline value for hardness in drinking water — there simply is not evidence that the calcium and magnesium in hard water harm you at the levels found in supply.2 Those minerals are the same ones you get from food. Hard water is a nuisance for appliances and skin, not a safety problem.7

KIDNEY STONES & HEART HEALTH — WHAT'S ACTUALLY KNOWN

There is debated evidence that harder water is associated with slightly lower cardiovascular mortality, but WHO is explicit that this does not prove cause and effect.2 The oft-repeated "hard water causes kidney stones" line is weak and inconclusive; for people with healthy kidneys, hard water is considered safe to drink.7

THE MYTH: "A SOFTENER WILL FIX MY ECZEMA"

The Softened Water Eczema Trial (SWET, 2011) fitted ion-exchange softeners in the homes of 336 children with moderate-to-severe eczema in hard-water areas. At 12 weeks there was no significant improvement over usual care, and the authors recommended against softeners as a treatment.5 A 2021 systematic review agreed for established eczema, finding only a weak, very-low-certainty observational link.6 Soft water may feel gentler and use less soap — but it is not a cure.

How to test your water

Everything above is academic until you know your own number. Three ways to get it, from quickest to most precise.

    Hardness test strips (₹150–400)

    Dip, wait, match the colour to the chart. These measure hardness specifically — calcium and magnesium — which a TDS meter cannot. Good enough to know your band (soft, hard, very hard) and decide whether to act.

  2. 2

    TDS meter (₹200–500)

    Handy and cheap, but remember it reads total dissolved solids, not hardness.1 Use it to track overall mineral load and to check an RO purifier, not to size a softener. A high TDS hints at possible hardness; it does not confirm it.

  3. 3

    Lab titration / full water report (₹500–2,000)

    A lab uses EDTA titration to measure calcium and magnesium exactly, and reports pH, alkalinity and other ions too. This is the number to get before buying a whole-house softener or if you suspect other contaminants.

Treatments that work — and ones that don't

Only two technologies genuinely remove calcium and magnesium: ion-exchange softening and reverse osmosis. Everything else either reduces scale sticking without lowering hardness, or does nothing you can measure.

ION-EXCHANGE SOFTENER

The real fix — with a sodium trade-off

Resin beads swap each calcium or magnesium ion for two sodium ions, then regenerate with a salt brine. WHO confirms this reduces scale in pipes, fixtures and water heaters and improves laundry, but raises the sodium and chloride in the water.8 Roughly 46 mg of sodium is added per litre for every 100 mg/L of hardness removed — minor for most, worth noting on a low-salt diet.

SALT-FREE "CONDITIONERS" (TAC)

Less scale, same hardness

Template-assisted crystallization has been evaluated by university researchers (Arizona State's WET Center) and can stop scale sticking to surfaces.11 But it does not lower hardness — your water is just as hard, it simply deposits less. Fine for scale-only worries; useless if you want softer water for skin or laundry.

REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO)

Removes hardness and much more

An RO membrane strips out dissolved solids including calcium and magnesium, so it softens as a side effect. It is a point-of-use drinking-water fix, not a whole-house one, and it wastes some water. For the full RO / UV / UF picture, see our purifier technology explainer.

Clip-on magnets and plug-in "electronic" units are marketed hard but have never produced reliable, repeatable independent results. Our research found no confirmed evidence they remove or neutralise hardness — treat them as unproven until that changes.

Once your test gives you a number in mg/L as CaCO3, match it to a sensible action. This is guidance, not a rule — plumbing, budget and whether you drink borewell water all shift the call.

BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING

Test first, then decide. Separate the two problems: appliance scale (treat at the inlet with a softener or conditioner) and drinking-water quality (treat at the kitchen tap with RO). Many Indian homes need both, and buying one when you needed the other is the most common — and expensive — mistake. Frequently asked questions

What counts as hard water, and how is it measured?

Hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in water, expressed in milligrams per litre as calcium carbonate (mg/L as CaCO3), which is the same number people loosely call ppm. The US Geological Survey and WHO use the same scale: 0 to 60 mg/L is soft, 61 to 120 is moderately hard, 121 to 180 is hard, and above 180 is very hard. Note that this is not the same as your TDS meter reading. TDS measures all dissolved solids, including sodium, chloride and sulphates that add nothing to hardness, so a TDS number is only a rough proxy. Only a hardness test (strip or lab titration) tells you the actual calcium and magnesium content.

Does hard water ruin my geyser?

Less dramatically than most marketing claims, and it depends on the type. Most Indian homes use electric storage geysers. In the US Department of Energy PNNL study of the Battelle test data, hard water did not reduce the efficiency or tank life of electric storage heaters at all — only the heating element wears out faster because scale bakes onto it. Gas storage heaters lost about 3 percentage points of efficiency (70.4% to 67.4%) over two years of hard-water use, and gas tankless units scaled up fastest and needed periodic descaling. So the honest takeaway for India is: your geyser tank is usually fine, but the heating element and any tankless or gas unit benefit from regular descaling.

Is hard water safe to drink?

Yes. WHO proposes no health-based guideline value for hardness and does not consider it a health risk at the levels found in drinking water. The calcium and magnesium are the same minerals you get from food. There is some debated epidemiological evidence that harder water is associated with slightly lower cardiovascular mortality, but WHO stresses this does not prove cause and effect. Very hard water can taste chalky or metallic and is a nuisance for appliances and skin, but that is an aesthetic and household issue, not a safety one.

Will a water softener cure my eczema or dry skin?

Softeners are not a proven eczema treatment. The Softened Water Eczema Trial (SWET, 2011) fitted ion-exchange softeners in the homes of 336 children with moderate to severe eczema in hard-water areas and found no significant improvement over usual care at 12 weeks. A 2021 systematic review reached the same conclusion for established eczema, while noting only a weak, very-low-certainty observational link between hard water and eczema. Soft water can make skin feel less tight and use less soap, which some people prefer, but do not buy a softener expecting it to clear a skin condition.

Do magnetic or electronic "descalers" actually work?

There is no reliable independent evidence that magnetic or electronic descalers remove or neutralise hardness. They are marketed heavily but have never produced the kind of controlled, repeatable results that stand up to scrutiny, so treat them as unproven. If you want a genuine no-salt option, template-assisted crystallization (TAC) conditioners have at least been evaluated by university researchers and can reduce scale sticking — but even TAC does not lower the actual hardness of your water. The only technologies that truly remove calcium and magnesium are ion-exchange softening and reverse osmosis.

Does a water softener add salt to my drinking water?

It adds sodium, not the sodium chloride you eat. An ion-exchange softener swaps every calcium or magnesium ion for two sodium ions, so softened water carries more sodium and chloride than the raw supply. The stoichiometry works out to roughly 46 mg of sodium per litre for every 100 mg/L of hardness removed. For most people that is minor, but anyone on a strict low-sodium diet should keep a separate unsoftened or reverse-osmosis tap for drinking and cooking.

Should I soften the whole house or just treat one tap?

Match the fix to the problem. Whole-house ion-exchange softening protects pipes, geysers and washing machines and is worth it in genuinely hard or very hard supply. If your only real complaint is drinking-water taste or high TDS, a point-of-use reverse-osmosis purifier at the kitchen tap is cheaper and more appropriate. Many Indian homes end up with both: a softener or scale conditioner on the inlet for appliances, and an RO purifier for drinking. Test your water first, then decide — the right answer depends entirely on your numbers.
