Important: gravity purifiers do not reduce TDS
Gravity purifiers work only for low-TDS municipal or already-soft water. They use physical filtration (activated carbon, germ-kill or a ceramic candle) and do not reduce TDS the way an RO unit does. Test your water's TDS before buying.
Choose gravity if: municipal tap water, low-TDS supply, frequent power cuts, or you want zero electricity. Choose RO instead if: high-TDS or borewell water, or you need dissolved salts and heavy metals removed.

Buy the brand you can actually get serviced
In this niche, after-sales failure — a leaking tap, a choked candle, no one answering the phone — is the top cause of unhappy owners. Buy a brand you can service.
- Nationwide beats boutique. A household name like Pureit (HUL) keeps spares in every town and takes most of that risk away.
- Boutique can still be excellent. A well-built small brand like RAMA is a fine choice if you accept ad-hoc service.

What a gravity purifier can and cannot do
A gravity purifier removes sediment, improves taste with activated carbon, and — with a ceramic candle — adds a bacteria barrier. It does not reduce TDS.
- It handles municipal water. The CDC household treatment guide notes activated carbon cuts chlorine, taste and odour, while ceramic filtration removes microbes and turbidity.
- It does not touch dissolved salts. Per the WHO's TDS review, TDS is dissolved salts judged on taste — no gravity filter removes it, so ignore "TDS up to 500" claims.
- Not for hard or borewell water. That needs an electric RO instead.

Carbon plus germ-kill vs a ceramic candle
For municipal supply, both approaches deliver clean, good-tasting water. Neither is a reason to overpay.
