When to choose a drill driver over a hammer drill
A drill driver's chuck rotates and nothing else. It has no percussion, so it cannot meaningfully drill concrete, brick or tile.
- Most complaints here are this mistake. "You cannot drill your house wall" — the tool is working as designed.
- For walls, go cordless or corded. See our cordless hammer drills or cheaper corded drill machine sets.
- For everything else, a driver wins. It is lighter, cheaper and better controlled for furniture, cabinets and fittings.

Read the model code — it tells you what the tool is
Every major brand encodes the hammer function in the model number. It is more reliable than the listing title.
- Bosch. GSR rotates only. GSB adds impact.
- Makita. DDF or DF is a driver drill. DHP or HP is a hammer driver drill.
- DeWalt. DCD777 and DCD708 are drivers. DCD778, DCD805 and DCD806 hammer.
- Copy leaks across. Bosch's GSR 185-Li listing claims "10mm in masonry", copied from the GSB hammer drill.

Clutch settings matter
For a driver, clutch stages matter more than headline torque. A well-clutched 35 Nm tool is often nicer to use than a blunt 60 Nm one.
- What the collar does. A clutch slips at a set resistance, so the screw stops before the head strips.

- More stages, finer steps. You get more control between "just snug" and "over-tightened".

Chuck size & quality: the chuck is the part that fails
The chuck is the most commonly reported failure in the reviews we analysed. Test it the day it arrives.
- 13 mm fits more bits. 10 mm is fine for household work.
- Keyless is quicker. A keyed chuck grips harder but needs its key every time.
- Wobble is the warning. Fit a long bit, run it slowly and watch the tip. It should trace a point, not a circle.

Everything under about ₹6,000 here is brushed. Brushless is worth paying for if the tool sees regular use.
