The most common complaint across budget heat guns is smoke or a burning smell. It shows up within minutes to weeks, usually on the highest setting. In the verified India reviews we analysed, the share of recent 1-2 star reviews ran from 9% on the Stanley STXH2000 to 31% on the Buildskill.
One gun we considered, the Amazon Basics 1700W, was left out entirely. 55% of its recent verified reviews were 1-2 stars. Whatever you buy, use the lower setting when the job allows. Stop at once if it smokes — that is a fire risk, not break-in.

Wattage isn't the whole story — look at temperature control
The number of heat settings matters more than 1800W versus 2000W. A gun with only full heat will melt delicate plastic.
- Heat guns span a wide range. Most run between about 100°C and 550°C, and different jobs need different points in it.
- Dual-setting is the minimum. A 350°C / 550°C switch covers most home work.
- Three stages or variable is better. A low stage near 60°C protects shrink film and stickers.

Airflow rate controls how fast and how gently heat arrives
Airflow, measured in L/min, decides how spread-out the hot air is. More airflow heats a bigger area faster but is harder to aim.
- High airflow suits broad jobs. Paint stripping and drying want 500 L/min or more.
- Low airflow suits precision. Heat-shrink tubing and soldering need a gentler stream.
- Separate controls help. The best guns let you change airflow without changing the heat.

Don't run a budget heat gun continuously on High
Smoke or a burning smell is the top complaint on guns under ₹1,500. It looks like a price-tier limitation, not one brand's defect.

Warranty length is a starting point, not a promise. The heating coil is the part most likely to fail.

- Many listings state nothing. Ask the seller before you buy.

Between two similar guns, pick the one that bundles real nozzles. A set costs extra if bought later.

- Reduction nozzle. Concentrates heat for spot work such as plastic welding.

Sub-600W mini guns are built for low-heat precision work. They will not strip paint or weld plastic.

- Low heat is enough for tubing. Polyolefin heat-shrink tubing shrinks at about 143°C.
Buy a mini gun because you need its gentle output, not to save money.

A heat gun runs at 400-600°C for long stretches. Two safety features are worth checking on the listing.
- Overheat or overload cutoff. It shuts the gun off if the vents are blocked. Bosch, INGCO, DOCOSS and AGARO list it.
- Class II double insulation. A double-insulated appliance needs no earth wire, which suits two-pin sockets.
- A stable stand. It keeps the hot nozzle off your workbench.
