Air Purifier Buying Guide India 2026: CADR and HEPA

Most air purifier guides start with a brand list and end with a discount link. Both skip the two numbers that actually decide whether a machine cleans your room: the filter class printed on the spec sheet, and the CADR matched to your room's volume. This guide works from those two numbers outward — what the standards really say, what Indian dust does to filter life, and what ownership costs over three years.

Start here: the four questions that actually matter

An air purifier is a fan pushing air through a filter, sized for one closed room. Everything else on the box — ionizers, UV lamps, app dashboards — is secondary or worse. Choosing well means answering four questions in order.

    Which room are you protecting?

    One machine cleans one closed room. Start with the bedroom — it is where you spend seven to eight unbroken hours, and a correctly sized bedroom unit beats small units scattered around the house.

    What CADR does that room need?

    Measure the room, do thirty seconds of math, and ignore the "coverage area" on the box. The sizing math, below.

  3. 3

    Is the filter actually HEPA?

    "HEPA-type" is not HEPA. Demand an explicit H13 class printed in the specifications. How to read the filter grade.

  4. 4

    What will filters cost you per year?

    Electricity is trivial; replacement filters are the real running cost, and Indian air eats them faster than the rated life. The three-year math.

THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE

Buying by the "coverage area" printed on the box. Coverage claims assume maximum fan speed — a noise level nobody sleeps next to — and air-change targets far looser than a polluted Indian winter demands. Two purifiers claiming the same square footage can differ hugely in actual clean-air output. The number that cannot lie is CADR, checked against your room's volume.

Does your home actually need one in 2026?

If you live in the Indo-Gangetic plain, yes without qualification. Elsewhere, the honest answer depends on your city and who lives in your home. The winter of 2025-26 gave India its clearest data yet.

That winter, 204 of 238 monitored Indian cities exceeded the national PM2.5 standard — up from 173 the previous year — and Delhi logged 18 severe and 87 very-poor days against a single good one. Note the reference line: even "clean" Bengaluru at 39 µg/m³ sits roughly eight times above the WHO annual guideline of 5 µg/m³. Delhi has now been the world's most polluted capital for eight consecutive years.

The most telling 2025 fact: Punjab's stubble burning collapsed by about 70% — and Delhi's air still turned hazardous after Diwali, with station readings crossing 600 in December. Pollution here is structural, not a one-off event. This is an every-winter purchase, not a panic purchase.

Indoor air is not the refuge it feels like

Measurement studies put average indoor PM2.5 in Delhi homes at around 80 µg/m³ — and University of Chicago (EPIC) fieldwork found indoor levels in Delhi homes often exceeding the nearest outdoor government monitor. The same study carries this guide's most important lesson: high-income homes were 13 times more likely to own purifiers, yet their indoor air was only about 10% cleaner than low-income homes. Owning the machine did not deliver clean air — correct sizing, closed rooms and fresh filters do.

What the health evidence actually supports

Being honest about this is rare among buying guides, so here it is. Purifiers demonstrably cut indoor PM2.5 in closed rooms. The strongest clinical result to date is a randomized crossover trial published in JACC in August 2025: one month of home HEPA filtration lowered systolic blood pressure by a net 3.0 mmHg in adults with elevated readings — a clinically meaningful effect. Child-asthma trials show directional symptom improvement. What does not yet exist is a large India-based trial proving long-term health outcomes. Doctors in Delhi nevertheless routinely advise purifiers for children, the elderly and respiratory patients during severe episodes.

WHY NOT WAIT FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO FIX IT

The 2025-26 season settled this. Delhi's Connaught Place smog tower is shut after studies found no meaningful effect beyond a small radius. The city's first cloud-seeding trials produced no measurable rain, and IIT Delhi's report called winter seeding "not viable". GRAP restrictions were imposed reactively — after AQI breached trigger levels — 13 out of 17 times. The only purification that verifiably works happens inside a sealed room you control.

The filter: H13 or it is not HEPA

HEPA is a performance standard, not a material. Under the European EN 1822 standard used on spec sheets worldwide, each class has a minimum capture efficiency at the most penetrating particle size — and only two classes actually qualify as HEPA.

The gap is not cosmetic. "HEPA-type" media passes anywhere from 5 to 167 times more particles at the hardest particle size than H13. And because no regulator — in India or anywhere else — polices the word HEPA on packaging, most filters carrying the claim are never independently tested.

The fake-HEPA problem on Indian marketplaces

Consumer warnings aimed specifically at Amazon and Flipkart buyers describe the pattern: "HEPA-like" and "HEPA-style" wording, exaggerated coverage claims that exploit health urgency, and — the reliable tell — no CADR figure anywhere on the listing, because CADR is the one spec that cannot be faked cheaply. Red flags to walk away from:

  • "HEPA-type", "HEPA-like" or "HEPA-style" instead of a class
  • No EN 1822 class (H13/H14) stated anywhere in the specs
  • No CADR figure published for the unit
  • A price too low to plausibly include a real HEPA stage
  • An unverifiable seller with no service network

THE H14 TRAP

Higher class is not automatically better to buy. H14 media creates 30–60% more airflow resistance than H13, so the same fan delivers lower CADR, more noise and higher power draw. A high-CADR H13 machine cleans your room faster than a choked H14 one. For homes: H13 plus generous CADR wins, every time.

One more thing the class cannot tell you: seal quality. A genuine H13 filter in a leaky housing performs like a far lower grade, because air takes the path of least resistance around the media. This is where anonymous budget units fail even when the filter itself is real — and another reason the published CADR, which measures the whole machine, outranks the filter grade alone.

CADR: the one number that cannot lie

CADR — Clean Air Delivery Rate — is the volume of fully cleaned air a purifier delivers, combining fan power and filter efficiency in one figure. It is measured under two different standards you will meet on Indian listings: the US AHAM standard (in CFM, with separate smoke, dust and pollen ratings) and China's GB/T 18801 (in m³/h), which most India-market units including Xiaomi quote. The conversion: 1 CFM ≈ 1.7 m³/h.

The sizing math, honestly

The target is around 5 air changes per hour (ACH) — the level the US AHAM "2/3 rule" delivers and the CDC's benchmark for occupied spaces. The formula:

Required CADR (CFM) = room volume in cubic feet × 5, divided by 60. Multiply by 1.7 for m³/h.

Worked example — a 12 × 10 ft bedroom with a 10 ft ceiling: volume is 1,200 cubic feet; times 5, divided by 60, gives 100 CFM — call it 170 m³/h of CADR, minimum. Buy headroom above the minimum: rated CADR is measured at maximum fan speed, and you will actually run the machine at medium so you can sleep.

Measure your own ceiling — the difference between 8 and 10 feet moves the requirement by a quarter. For severe-episode sizing, AHAM's own heavy-smoke guidance is stricter still: smoke CADR in CFM equal to the full room area in square feet, roughly 1.5× the table above.

RUN THIS CHECK ON ANY LISTING

Take the claimed coverage area and test it against the CADR. Example from a current best-seller: a 360 m³/h unit claiming 462 sq ft. At 5 ACH under the 2/3 rule, 360 m³/h (about 212 CFM) honestly supports roughly 318 sq ft at 8 ft ceilings — the claim assumes looser targets at full fan speed. The machine is good; the coverage number is marketing. Size by the math, and treat every coverage claim with the same discount.

CCM: the filter-lifetime spec worth knowing

Units rated under GB/T 18801 also carry a CCM class — Cumulate Clean Mass, the total milligrams of pollutant a filter absorbs before its CADR halves. Particulate classes run P1 to P4 (≥12,000 mg). In Indian particle loads, a P4 filter is the difference between a filter that lasts a winter and one that dies in the middle of it — prefer it where the spec is published.

Activated carbon: grams matter, not the word

HEPA handles particles. Everything you smell — cooking odours, traffic fumes, paint, new-furniture off-gassing — is gas-phase, and only activated carbon adsorbs it. Capacity scales with carbon mass, which is exactly the spec most listings omit.

Coated mesh: what budget units ship

A thin sheet with carbon dust bonded on — sometimes only a few grams. It handles light odours briefly, then saturates within weeks in a high-VOC home and does nothing after that. If the listing does not state carbon weight, assume this is what you are getting.

Pellet beds: the real thing

Granular activated-carbon pellets in a honeycomb tray. Serious gas-removal machines carry 450 g to well over a kilogram. If odours, smoke or VOCs are your actual problem, carbon mass is the spec to shop on.

On formaldehyde: "destroys formaldehyde" copy is only credible when the unit publishes a formaldehyde CADR plus an F3/F4 CCM class under GB/T 18801. No numbers, no claim. And note that carbon exhausts faster than HEPA in Indian kitchens and traffic-facing flats — replace it when odours return, not on the HEPA schedule.

Ionizers, UV, plasma: the add-on technologies, judged

Every rupee of a purifier's price that goes into an extra technology is a rupee not spent on filter area and fan quality. Here is what the evidence says about each add-on.

THE OZONE BENCHMARK TO ASK FOR

Since 2007, California (CARB) has required every electronic air cleaner sold there to emit no more than 0.050 ppm of ozone. India has no equivalent rule, which makes CARB certification the best available proxy that a unit will not gas your bedroom. If a listing leads with "ionic", "plasma" or "activated oxygen" and shows no ozone certification, walk away — especially for a child's room.

Sensors, auto mode and the noise number nobody prints

The AQI display is a trend line, not a measurement

Consumer purifiers use inexpensive laser particle sensors, and independent testing is blunt about them: Smart Air found Xiaomi's built-in monitor underestimated true PM2.5 by up to 218 µg/m³ and effectively stopped counting above 50 µg/m³ — units showed reassuring green while reference instruments read unhealthy. Coarse Indian dust also fouls the sensor chamber over time, causing stuck readings until the inlet is cleaned.

WHY AUTO MODE FAILS IN POLLUTION SEASON

Auto mode trusts that optimistic sensor. In overnight closed-room tests across Xiaomi, Philips and Levoit units, auto mode throttled to a whisper the moment its own sensor was satisfied — and left indoor air in the unhealthy range all night. During Delhi-winter months, run a fixed medium or high speed sized to your ACH target, and treat the display as a trend indicator. The purifier grading its own homework is a conflict of interest.

Noise: the spec that decides whether you actually use it

CADR is measured at maximum speed — typically a 55–65 dB roar. The speed you will actually sleep next to is much lower, delivering a fraction of rated CADR. Two practical rules follow. First, for bedrooms and nurseries look for a sleep mode under about 30 dB. Second, buy CADR headroom: a 400 m³/h machine at medium speed cleans as much as a 250 m³/h machine flat out, at a fraction of the noise. What it really costs: filters, not electricity

The electricity fear, retired with arithmetic

Purifiers draw 20–50 W — less than a ceiling fan. At ₹8 per unit, a 33 W machine running 12 hours a day through a four-month winter uses about 48 units of electricity: roughly ₹380 for the whole season. Even 24×7, year-round running lands near ₹2,300 a year. Every India-sourced estimate agrees the monthly figure stays under ₹300 in realistic use.

Filters are the real bill

Replacement filters cost ₹1,500–6,000 depending on brand, and Indian pollution consumes them at 1.5–2× the rated pace. That makes filter price × filter life the spec that decides ownership cost — and it reorders the market in ways sticker prices hide.

The gap between "budget" and "premium" shrinks from ₹3,800 at the till to about ₹5,400 over three years — while the longer-life filter buys a 5-year motor warranty and higher-grade filtration. Filter life in Indian dust: the brochure is optimistic

Rated filter lives assume the particle loads of markets with cleaner air. Indian reality — coarse road dust, cooking smoke, and winter spikes where Delhi's AQI swings from 60 to 450 within hours — loads filters far faster. India-focused guidance puts heavy use in Delhi NCR at roughly 6–8 months per HEPA filter, with 10–12 months realistic in moderate cities. Budget for it in the purchase decision, not as a surprise.

The washable pre-filter catches coarse dust before it reaches the HEPA. Cleaning it with a brush attachment is the cheapest single act of filter-life extension available to you.

TRUST SYMPTOMS

Over the indicator light

Filter indicators mostly count hours, not dirt. The real signs a filter is done: airflow audibly down at the same speed, a musty smell from the unit, visibly grey media, or indoor PM no longer dropping on high.

MONSOON NOTE

High humidity plus closed windows favours mould and musty smells. A purifier captures airborne spores, but it will not remove mould growing on a wall — fix the moisture source. In very humid weeks, replace filters sooner than the schedule says: mould can grow on a damp HEPA itself.

Placement and habits: half the performance is free

The EPIC Delhi finding — purifier-owning homes barely cleaner than homes without — is a usage failure, not a hardware one. The habits below cost nothing and decide whether your machine delivers its rated performance.

  • Close the room. A purifier is a closed-loop system; an open window feeds it outdoor pollution faster than it can clean. One machine per closed room — it cannot help the room next door through a doorway.
  • Keep the intake 15 cm off the wall. Placement testing found airflow collapses to about 5% of normal flat against a wall, and recovers fully by 10 cm. Corners are the dead zone of any room.
  • Bedroom position: 1.8–3 m from the head of the bed, elevated on a low table rather than the floor.
  • Run it continuously while the room is occupied — indoor levels track outdoor pollution with a one-to-four-hour lag, so intermittent running lets it rebound.
  • Air the room out when you can. No filter removes CO₂, which climbs all night in a sealed bedroom. When outdoor AQI dips below about 100, open the windows for 20–30 minutes, then seal and let the purifier work.
  • Seal the obvious gaps. A one-centimetre gap under the door is a continuous leak; in poorly sealed homes, indoor air approaches outdoor levels within hours.

For a nursery

Infants breathe 40–60 times a minute and take in more air per kilogram of body weight than adults. The nursery configuration: 4–5 ACH sizing, strictly ozone-free (no ionizer, or ionizer off), and sleep-mode noise under 30 dB.

What an air purifier cannot do

Knowing the limits is the difference between a useful appliance and a disappointment. None of these are close calls in the evidence.

When to buy: before the smog, never during it

Air purifier demand in India is violently seasonal, and it moves against the buyer in November.

  1. January – August

    The off-season. Street prices run deepest below MRP — our August 2026 price pull found 40–65% off MRP on major brands. Selection is full, nothing is sold out. The rational buying window.

  2. Late September – early October

    Festival sales (Amazon's Great Indian Festival window) land just before the pollution season starts around mid-October. Last sensible moment to buy.

  3. Diwali → November

    The panic. Post-Diwali 2025, purifier sales in Delhi NCR spiked roughly 20× on Amazon and 8× on Flipkart; retailers reported families bulk-buying three and four units. Popular models sell out precisely when you want them.

  4. November – January

    Peak pollution: GRAP restrictions, severe AQI days, school disruptions. If you are buying now, prioritise in-stock CADR over brand loyalty — and know that Delhi NCR alone accounted for 72% of one national retailer's 2025 purifier sales.

  5. February onward

    Air improves, demand collapses, discounts return — and the Republic Day sales in late January have historically discounted purifiers steeply. The cycle restarts.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Buy a machine with a printed H13 class and a published CADR sized to your room's volume at 5 air changes per hour. Budget one to two filter changes a year in a polluted city. Skip every add-on technology. Close the door, keep it off the wall, run it all night. That is the entire game — everything else on the box is packaging.

"HEPA-type", "HEPA-like" and "99% HEPA" labels almost always mean E11 or E12 media, which passes anywhere from 5 to 167 times more particles. Nobody polices the word HEPA on a box, so the only trustworthy signal is an explicit H13-or-better class printed in the specifications alongside a published CADR.

Is an H14 filter better than H13 for a home?

Usually not. H14 media creates 30–60% more airflow resistance than H13, so the same fan delivers less clean air, more noise and higher power draw. Smoke particles are caught by HEPA, but cooking gases need a substantial activated-carbon stage, and Indian frying and tadka fumes coat HEPA fibres with grease that permanently clogs the filter. A chimney or exhaust fan removes cooking pollution at the source far better — run it during cooking and for 15 minutes after, and keep the purifier in the adjacent room to catch drift.

Are ionizers and ozone-producing air purifiers safe?

Treat them with caution. Ionizers charge particles so they stick to walls and floors rather than capturing them, and the corona discharge can produce ozone — a lung irritant. California caps electronic air cleaners at 0.050 ppm ozone; India has no equivalent rule, so CARB certification is the best available safety proxy. Red-flag words on a listing: ionic, plasma, activated oxygen. Prefer filtration-only units, or at minimum an ionizer you can switch off.

Air purifier vs indoor plants — which cleans air better?

The purifier, by orders of magnitude. The famous 1989 NASA plant study used small sealed chambers; a 2019 Drexel University review of 12 studies concluded that in real buildings normal air exchange dilutes pollutants far faster than plants absorb them — you would need on the order of 100 plants per square metre to compete with ordinary ventilation. Keep plants because you like them, not for your AQI.

Do air purifiers protect against viruses?

Partially, as one layer. HEPA filters do capture the respiratory aerosols that carry viruses, and studies show reduced airborne virus concentrations with properly sized, continuously running units. But the US EPA is explicit that a portable air cleaner alone is not sufficient protection — it cannot help with close-range, face-to-face transmission. Think of it as a complement to ventilation, not a force field.

When is the best time to buy an air purifier in India?

Before the smog, not during it. Demand explodes after Diwali — post-Diwali 2025, purifier sales in Delhi NCR jumped roughly 20× on Amazon and 8× on Flipkart — which is precisely when selection is thinnest. The early-October festival sales land just before the pollution season, and the January-to-August off-season routinely shows 40–65% off MRP on major brands.

Is a Dyson air purifier worth the premium?

You are paying for industrial design, the bladeless fan or heater function, and very quiet operation — not for proportionally more clean air. Independent India-focused analysis puts it plainly: the premium is difficult to justify on purification performance alone, and mid-priced machines from Philips, Coway or Honeywell deliver similar or higher CADR for far less. The one genuine economics shift is the HushJet Compact's claimed five-year filter, which undercuts the usual Dyson running-cost problem.
