Every pick here earned its place on recent verified owner reviews and a filter you can keep running, not on "99.97%" claims. If you'd rather skip the full comparison, these are the two worth choosing between.
For most people, buy the Reffair AX50 (₹3,099). It packs H13 HEPA, activated carbon, a plasma ionizer and UVC into one cupholder unit. It also has the best owner record we found, with only 8% of recent verified reviews negative. The trade-off: no published CADR, and its filter was not on Amazon.in when we checked.

HEPA purifier or ionizer: know what you are buying
Buy a fan-and-filter HEPA unit if you want cleaner air to breathe in traffic. Buy an ionizer only for odour and freshness.
- HEPA traps particles. A fan pulls cabin air through a filter that holds PM2.5, dust and pollen.
- Ionizers move them. Charged particles drop onto your dashboard and seats instead of leaving the car.
- Ionizers cost nothing to run. The Sharp and Wellinzer picks have no filter to replace.

HEPA grades explained
Any true HEPA grade is fine in a car. Airflow matters far more than the grade on the box.
- H13 is the common grade. Under the EN 1822 HEPA classes, H13 captures at least 99.95% and H14 at least 99.995%.
- "99.97% at 0.3 µm" is not special. It is the US definition of HEPA, so every unit here can claim it.
- Distrust odd grades. "HEPA-type" is not HEPA, and "H14" on the GP5311 is not a recognised grade for its filter.

CADR rating for cars
Look for a published CADR (clean air delivery rate). It tells you how much filtered air the fan actually pushes out.
- Only two picks publish one. The Reffair QX50 Plus rates 34 m³/h and the Reffair AX30 rates 16.2 m³/h.
- Time to clean scales with it. At 16 m³/h, a roughly 3 m³ hatchback cabin needs about 35 minutes to lose 95% of particles.
A bigger SUV cabin takes proportionally longer. A tiny fan with no CADR is why buyers write "just a fan with a filter".

Ionizer technology benefits and the ozone question
Ionizers are good at odour and need no filter. Their weak spot is ozone, which none of the ionizers here has certified.
- Ozone harms lungs. The US EPA warns that inhaled ozone can cause chest pain, coughing and throat irritation.
- There is a real limit. California's air cleaner rule caps ozone at under 0.050 ppm, and covers ionizers.
- "Ozone-free" is self-declared. No listing we checked shows such a certificate.

UVC light purification
Treat UVC as an extra, not a reason to buy. The particle filter does the real work.
- Two picks include it. The Reffair AX50 and QX50 Plus add a UVC stage alongside HEPA.
- No dose is published. Neither brand states UVC output, so its effect cannot be compared.

Filter replacement costs
Check the replacement filter before you buy the purifier. A HEPA unit is useless once its first filter clogs.
- Filters last 6-12 months. Brands quote 6 months (QX50 Plus) and 9 months (AX30 and AX50).
- Some are in stock. On 15 October 2026, Gustto (₹699) and Airofy (₹507) filters were on Amazon.in.
- Some are not. The AX30 filter was unavailable, and no AX50, QX50 Plus or GP5311 filter was listed.
- Ionizers cost nothing. The Sharp has a washable pre-filter and the Wellinzer has no filter.

Use recirculation mode
Switch the AC to recirculation whenever the purifier runs. Fresh-air mode keeps pulling outside air in.
- Recirculation works on its own. In a 2008 in-car filtration study, recirculation cut cabin nanoparticles below office levels within about 3 minutes.
- Open windows defeat it. Outside air replaces cabin air faster than a small purifier can clean it.
On long drives, let fresh air in briefly now and then.

Smart features worth paying for
Auto on/off is the feature that matters most. A purifier you must switch on every drive usually ends up switched off.
- Starts with the ignition. The Philips GP5311 and Wellinzer TAG5 switch on by themselves.
- Shows air quality. The Philips GP5311 and Reffair QX50 Plus have an air-quality light and auto speed.

12V vs USB power and placement
Most picks here run from USB or Type-C. Placement matters more than the plug.
- Cupholder units are easy. They sit low and take up a cupholder.
- Headrest units sit higher. The QX50 Plus and GP5311 clean air closer to breathing height.
- Avoid internal batteries. A parked car in an Indian summer gets very hot.
