Mouse Buying Guide India 2026: DPI, Sensors and Grip

Almost every number on a mouse box is either marketing or a spec you are reading wrong. 30,000 DPI does not make you accurate, 8000Hz polling saves you under a millisecond, and the sensor stopped mattering years ago. This guide works from the specs that decide how a mouse actually feels — shape, weight, switches, grip and wireless quality — so you buy the mouse, not the spec sheet.

Start here: the five decisions that actually matter

A mouse spec sheet has dozens of lines, but the buying decision collapses to five choices. Get these right and the rest is detail. We take them in order, because each one narrows the next.

THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE

Shopping by the headline numbers — DPI, polling rate, sensor model — instead of the things you actually feel. Two mice with identical spec sheets can feel completely different in the hand. The rest of this guide is a translation layer between the box and the reality.

The six types of mouse

Place yourself in one of these first. It rules out most of the market before you look at a single spec.

The DPI myth: higher is faster, not better

This is the one thing to un-learn before buying. DPI (or CPI, counts per inch) is how far the cursor travels per inch of hand movement. Higher DPI moves the cursor faster. It does not make you more precise. Precision is capped by your screen’s pixel grid, so beyond a point extra DPI adds no information at all.

RTINGS confirms a higher CPI range alone "does not necessarily mean a sensor is more accurate", and that most people find 800 to 3200 DPI most comfortable. The proof is in how professionals set up: across 623 tracked Valorant players, essentially none play above 1,600 DPI, and around 90% use just 400 or 800.

STICK TO NATIVE STEPS

Sensors have native DPI steps at multiples of 50 or 100 — 400, 800, 1600, 3200. Pick an in-between value like 1030 and the firmware has to interpolate, which does not add real resolution and can introduce jitter. Choose a native step and adjust in-game sensitivity instead.

A useful shortcut the pros use is eDPI — your DPI multiplied by in-game sensitivity. It is the true crosshair speed, and it is why 400 DPI at 1.0 sensitivity feels identical to 1600 DPI at 0.25. Set a low native DPI, then tune sensitivity to taste.

Sensors: a solved problem for almost everyone

The sensor is the part buyers worry about most and need to worry about least. RTINGS is blunt: "most modern mouse sensors, even in budget models, have reasonably low latency, and most people won’t notice any difference in movement delay between mice." For roughly 99% of users, the sensor is no longer what separates a good mouse from a bad one.

Optical vs "laser" — and why laser lost

An optical mouse lights the surface with an LED and photographs it thousands of times a second, computing motion from the frames. A "laser" mouse uses an infrared laser diode instead. Every current flagship gaming sensor uses an LED — often an infrared LED at 850nm, which is why "IR" on a spec sheet does not mean "laser." Laser keeps one genuine edge: it can track on glass and glossy surfaces, where standard optical sensors fail.

THE ONE SURFACE THAT STILL BREAKS SENSORS

Standard optical mice do not work properly on glass, transparent or specular surfaces, and multicoloured pads can confuse them. If your desk is bare glass, you need a glass-capable sensor or, more simply, a proper mousepad. This is the one place the optical-versus-laser choice still bites.

Read that table and then forget it. Useful DPI sits at 800 to 3200, which every sensor here clears many times over. Human hand motion never approaches even the slowest 250 IPS or 50 G rating. These headline numbers are a spec race, not a buying signal.

The traits that do still matter are subtle: no smoothing, acceleration or angle-snapping (so on-screen motion is a 1:1 map of your hand), and a low, adjustable lift-off distance if you lift and reposition often. The good news is that these are now common even on mid-range mice.

Polling rate: set 1000Hz and stop worrying

Polling rate is how many times per second the mouse reports to the PC. The report delay is simply 1000 divided by the rate: 125Hz is 8ms, 500Hz is 2ms, 1000Hz is 1ms, and 8000Hz is 0.125ms. The jump most people can feel is the one up to 1000Hz. Everything above it is chasing fractions of a millisecond.

THE 8000Hz REALITY CHECK

The entire gain from 1000Hz to 8000Hz is 0.875ms. That is less than one-seventh of a single frame on a 144Hz monitor, where one frame lasts 6.9ms. NVIDIA measures 1000Hz at about 1ms of latency. Unless you run a 360Hz-plus display and play competitively, 8000Hz mostly buys you extra CPU load and faster battery drain.

One more thing polling does not do: it only shrinks the mouse’s own latency. Your PC’s render time and your monitor’s response usually dominate total system lag by a wide margin. A faster mouse cannot fix a slow frame rate.

Switches: where cheap mice die first

The click switch is the part most likely to fail, usually as the dreaded double-click. There are three kinds, and the difference is real.

METAL CONTACT

Mechanical

Two metal contacts close on each press. Rated by lifespan bin, from 20 million to 100 million clicks. Kailh GM 8.0 is rated around 80 million; the cheapest mice use 5–10 million switches.

INFRARED BEAM

Optical

An infrared beam registers the click with no metal contact, so there is no bounce to wear out. Razer rates its optical switches at 70–100 million clicks by generation.

BEST OF BOTH

Hybrid

Logitech LIGHTFORCE keeps a mechanical click feel but actuates optically, so debounce delay is not needed and the switch lasts longer.

WHY MICE START DOUBLE-CLICKING

A mechanical switch’s metal contacts physically bounce on each press. As they wear and oxidise, the contact resistance rises and one press can register as two clicks. Firmware "debounce" only masks the fault by ignoring signals for a moment — it cannot cure it, and turning it up adds click latency. Optical switches have no metal contact, so this failure mode is physically absent. That is the real reason they were invented.

Weight and shape: the ultralight era

Gaming mice have shed a remarkable amount of weight. Flagship wireless mice now sit around 54 to 60 grams — the Razer Viper V3 Pro is 54g, the Logitech G Pro X Superlight 2 is 60g. Lower mass takes less force to start and stop, which helps fast flicks and cuts fatigue, mostly for fingertip and claw grips.

But lighter is not endlessly better. Many players find 50 to 60 grams the sweet spot; below 50g some aim worse because the mouse becomes twitchy on fine adjustments. And for office work with a palm grip, weight barely registers — a larger, heavier, stable body is often the more comfortable choice.

YOU NO LONGER NEED HONEYCOMB

Around 2019 to 2021, the only way to get a sub-60g mouse was a shell full of holes, with real downsides: dust ingress, less rigidity and an odd texture. Modern magnesium and thin-wall solid shells now hit the same weights with no holes at all, so a honeycomb shell is no longer a reason to buy — or to compromise.

Grip and hand size: the fit that decides comfort

This is the spec nobody prints and the one that matters most. How you hold a mouse, and how big your hand is, decide which shapes will ever feel right. Work it out before you shop.

MOST CONTACT

Palm grip

Your whole palm rests on the back. Relaxed and stable, best on tall, longer mice. Great for slow, precise gliding; weaker for fast flicks.

BALANCED

Claw grip

Fingers arched, less palm contact. Better for fast movement and precision than palm, and suits medium mice with a lower back.

LEAST CONTACT

Fingertip grip

Only your fingertips touch. Superb for quick flick shots on short, low, light mice; weaker for slow precise work.

Match the mouse to your hand

If you can, hold a mouse before buying, or check its length and width against one you already like. A shape that fights your grip will annoy you long after the DPI number stops mattering.

Wired vs wireless: the argument is over

A good 2.4GHz wireless mouse now matches a wired one for gaming. RTINGS finds that many gaming mice with proprietary USB receivers "match or even surpass wired models" on latency, with both rated good under 10ms. The catch is Bluetooth: it usually polls at around 125Hz and adds noticeable lag, so it is for office and travel, not competitive play.

Battery and multi-device

Wireless battery life varies by purpose, and the numbers are large. Gaming mice run roughly 40 to 95 hours per charge; the Logitech G Pro X Superlight 2 is rated up to 95 hours. Office mice last far longer — the MX Master 3S quotes 70 days, and the M720 Triathlon up to 24 months on a single AA. USB-C charging is now standard, and a one-minute top-up on the MX Master 3S gives about 3 hours of use.

If you switch between a desktop, laptop and tablet, look for multi-device features: Logitech Easy-Switch hops between three paired devices, and Flow moves the cursor across computers with copy and paste. These matter far more for real productivity than any gaming spec.

Ergonomics and health: the honest version

Vertical and slanted mice are marketed hard for wrist health, and the evidence is real but narrower than the ads suggest. Peer-reviewed EMG studies show a vertical mouse lowers forearm pronation — one measured 28° versus 42° for a standard mouse — and reduces wrist-extensor muscle activity. A 25 to 30 degree slant is linked to less pronation and lower muscle load.

"REDUCES STRAIN", NOT "PREVENTS RSI"

A 2018 systematic review found these benefits are "not yet supported by high-quality clinical trials." So the honest claim is reduced wrist pronation and forearm strain — not a cure for carpal tunnel or RSI. If you have wrist pain, a vertical mouse or a trackball is worth trying, ideally alongside proper desk setup, but treat it as comfort, not medicine.

Two more shape decisions matter for specific buyers. Left-handers need a truly ambidextrous mouse — symmetric shape with side buttons on both sides — or a dedicated left-handed model, because most ergonomic mice are right-slanted and unusable in the left hand. Trackball users keep the hand and arm still, which suits tight desks and reduces arm travel.

Feet, cable, software and build

The small details separate a mouse that feels premium from one that feels cheap, long after the spec sheet is forgotten.

  • Feet. PTFE (Teflon) is the standard glide material. Pure "virgin-grade" PTFE glides smoother than cheaper dyed feet.
  • Cable. On wired mice, a flexible braided "paracord" cable reduces drag and mimics a wireless feel; stiff rubber cables tug back.
  • Build. Squeeze the shell for flex, creak or rattle. Matte and textured coatings hold grip when your hand sweats; glossy shells get slippery.
  • Onboard memory. It stores DPI, polling and button maps on the mouse itself, so your settings follow you to any PC without vendor software running.
  • RGB. Cosmetic, and on a wireless mouse it draws real battery. High polling drains even more. Neither changes how the mouse performs.
