TV Buying Guide India 2026: Panels, HDR and Sizing

Almost every number on a TV box is either marketing or a spec you are reading wrong. "LED", "QLED" and "Mini LED" describe the same technology dressed up three ways; "HDR supported", "120Hz" and "HDMI 2.1" can all be technically true and practically meaningless. This guide works from the specs that cannot lie — panel type, real brightness, native refresh, viewing distance — so you buy the picture, not the badge.

Start here: the five decisions that actually matter

A modern TV has dozens of spec-sheet lines, but the buying decision collapses to five choices. Get these right and the rest is detail; get them wrong and no feature list saves the picture. We take them in order, because each one narrows the next.

    How big, for how far?

    Size is set by your sofa, not your budget. Measure the seating distance first, then buy the biggest screen that fits it. The distance math, below.

    Which panel is really under the badge?

    OLED, or an LCD — and if LCD, is it VA or IPS, and does it have genuine full-array dimming? The marketing name will not tell you. Decoding the panel.

    Is the HDR real or just "supported"?

    Decoding HDR is not displaying it. Around 400 nits is a certification floor; real HDR starts near 1,000. What the nits mean.

    Will you game on it?

    If yes, you need a genuine 4K-at-120Hz port and the right VRR flavour — not a branded "motion" number. The gaming specs that count.

    What is your sound plan?

    Thin TVs cannot do bass at any wattage. Decide now whether a soundbar is coming, because it changes which TV to buy. Sound and eARC.

THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE

Shopping by the badge — "QLED", "Mini LED", "HDR", "120Hz" — instead of the measurement behind it. Every one of those labels has been stretched to cover cheap hardware that does not deliver what the word implies. Two TVs with identical badges can look completely different. The rest of this guide is a translation layer between the box and the reality.

Size: buy for your sofa, not your budget

Screen size is the single biggest driver of how good a TV feels, and it is decided by one number you already have: how far you sit. The industry baseline is SMPTE's 30-degree field of view, which RTINGS adopts for mixed use. It reduces to a formula you can do in your head: screen size in inches ≈ seating distance in inches ÷ 1.6.

Two numbers, both from the verified formula: the comfortable 30-degree distance for everyday viewing, and the closer, more immersive 40-degree distance cinema fans prefer. Sit anywhere between the two. Most Indian living rooms put the sofa 2 to 3 m from the screen — which is exactly why 55-inch has become the sweet spot and 65-inch the fastest-growing size.

PEOPLE BUY BIGGER, NOT CLOSER

ITU-R's studies note that across every TV transition, viewing distance stayed roughly fixed — people do not rearrange the room, they buy a larger screen. So err toward the bigger size within your distance band. The regret after buying a TV is almost always "I should have gone bigger", never the reverse.

Resolution: 4K yes, 8K no

4K has four times the pixels of 1080p, but you only see the difference if you sit close enough. The science is settled: a person with 20/20 vision resolves about one-sixtieth of a degree, and extra pixels past that point are invisible. On a 65-inch TV, 4K's advantage over 1080p shows only from roughly 1.2 to 2.6 m; beyond about 2.6 m it looks identical to Full HD.

For Indian rooms that means 4K is clearly worth it on 55-inch and larger at 2 to 2.5 m, and only marginal on a 43-inch watched from 3 m. Since virtually every set 43-inch and up is 4K now, the real takeaway is the reverse: do not pay a premium for "8K future-proofing".

8K IS NOT WORTH BUYING IN 2026

There is essentially no 8K content to watch, and the resolution benefit is invisible at home distances. ITU-R's controlled tests found 4K rated only about half a grade above 1080p even at the ideal distance, and 8K only pulled ahead when viewers sat closer than three screen heights — which on an 8K panel implies a roughly 200-inch screen. Put the money into panel quality or size instead.

Panel technology: what the badge won't tell you

This is where most buyers get lost, because the marketing vocabulary is designed to blur it. Strip the names away and there are only two real families: LCD (lit by an LED backlight) and OLED (self-emissive). Nearly everything sold as "LED", "QLED", "Neo QLED", "QNED" or "Mini LED" is an LCD.

"LED TV" is an LCD — and the panel under it is VA or IPS

A "LED TV" is an LCD with an LED backlight, nothing more. What decides how it looks is the LCD panel beneath, and that is either VA or an IPS-family panel (often sold as ADS or ADS Pro). The trade-off between them is fixed and cannot be marketed away.

Panel type does not decide colour — that comes from the backlight and colour filters, so VA and IPS tie on colour. Flagship VA sets add wide-viewing-angle layers (Samsung Ultra Viewing Angle, Sony X-Wide Angle) that narrow the angle gap by trading away some contrast.

"QLED" and "Mini LED" are marketing, not panel types

QLED / NEO QLED / QNED / ULED

Labels for an LED-backlit LCD with some wide-colour technology — not a self-emissive display. They say nothing about whether the panel is VA or IPS, and some so-labelled sets contain no quantum dots at all: lab tests found none in three TCL "QLED" models, and LG's 2025 QNED evo openly dropped quantum dots while keeping the name.

MINI LED

Usually signals a denser, higher-quality full-array local dimming backlight — but not always. One 2025 "Mini LED" flagship used edge-lit dimming with about 24 zones that RTINGS called among the worst it had seen. Verify genuine full-array dimming with enough zones and good processing; the badge alone guarantees neither.

OLED: the only self-emissive option

OLED pixels make their own light, so each can switch fully off. That gives perfect blacks, perfect uniformity, zero blooming around bright objects, and the fastest response of any TV. The trade-offs: typically lower sustained full-screen brightness than the best LEDs, and a burn-in risk with static content (covered next). There are two kinds:

WOLED (LG DISPLAY)

White-OLED emitters with colour filters. RTINGS credits WOLED with the very best contrast, and its response time is dramatically faster than even the quickest QLED — excellent for gaming, though it can show more judder in films.

QD-OLED (SAMSUNG DISPLAY)

A blue OLED layer with red and green quantum dots, no white subpixel. Because the quantum dots emit in every direction, QD-OLED retains far more brightness and colour off-axis than LCD — well suited to wide seating.

NEITHER FAMILY IS INHERENTLY BRIGHTER ANY MORE

As of 2026, brightness is a per-model question, not a QLED-vs-OLED one. QLEDs average slightly brighter and hold up better in sustained bright scenes like sport, but the newest OLEDs match most QLEDs in mixed content. The extremes tell the story: flagship OLEDs reach roughly 2,000-2,500 nits and top Mini-LEDs 4,000-plus, while a cheap edge-lit QLED measures lower than any OLED. Always check the measurement for the exact model.

Which TVs actually last — the backlight story

No other Indian buying guide covers this, and it may be the most useful section here. RTINGS ran an accelerated longevity test on about 100 TVs over roughly three years (10,000-plus hours, which at Indian viewing averages of 3.5 to 4 hours a day works out to about 6 to 7 years). The failures were not random.

  • Backlight failure is the number-one way TVs die. 34% of LED models had at least one failed LED; because LEDs are wired in series, one dead LED can black out a zone or stop the TV powering on entirely.
  • Edge-lit is the least durable construction. 64% of edge-lit sets developed visible uniformity problems, versus 20% of full-array sets — heat from the bottom LED strip warps and cracks the internals, sometimes within a year of heavy use.
  • Sets with no local dimming fared worst of all — nearly 60% suffered partial or complete failure.
  • OLED was the most durable technology in the test (3 complete failures in 20 sets) — though every OLED showed burn-in under the torture conditions.
  • Price did not predict longevity, and glued panel assembly makes most TVs impractical to repair at any price.

THE DURABILITY RULES THIS PRODUCES

Prefer direct-lit or full-array (FALD) backlights over edge-lit for longevity — edge-lit exists mainly to make the thinnest TVs. Do not run any TV at maximum brightness constantly. And do not assume a premium price buys durability: it does not.

OLED burn-in: the honest picture

Burn-in is the one real OLED weakness, and it is widely misunderstood in both directions. First, separate two things: temporary image retention, which fades and is essentially a solved problem, from true burn-in, which is permanent, cumulative pixel wear from prolonged static content.

The evidence, from RTINGS' long-term testing, is reassuring for normal use and clear about the exception. Over 9,000-plus hours of varied real content — about five years at five hours a day — no burn-in is expected for people who watch a normal mix. But sustained static content, such as a live news feed left running, produced permanent burn-in after 5,000-plus hours.

Two properties matter for judging your own risk. Burn-in is cumulative, not session-based — two 30-minute bursts of static content wear the panel like one continuous hour. And it scales with brightness: the same set running a news channel at maximum brightness burned in far worse than at a moderate level.

SHOULD YOU AVOID OLED?

Varied viewing means low risk — buy the OLED and enjoy it. Weigh the risk, or pick a good LCD instead, if your TV will spend hours a day on static content: heavy 24-hour news watching, use as a PC monitor, or games with bright fixed HUDs. For everyone else, modern pixel-shift and refresh mitigations plus sensible brightness settle the question.

HDR reality: why "HDR supported" means little

HDR is the most oversold line on a TV box. Start with what it is not: HDR does not mean an overall brighter picture. Indoor HDR scenes are meant to sit at about the same average brightness as SDR — the extra headroom is for small, intense highlights like a reflection or the sun. "More nits = brighter picture" is marketing, not how HDR works.

It also means the same HDR film looks different on every TV. The signal can encode brightness far beyond any consumer set, so every TV must tone-map it down to what the panel can actually show — and there is no standard way to do that. Deep blacks matter as much as peak nits: standards-body studies found the raised blacks of a basic LCD satisfy only about half of viewers, which is why OLED or genuine full-array LCD is the recommendation for real HDR.

How many nits are "real HDR"

  • Around 400 nits ("HDR supported") is a certification floor, not real HDR. An ~400-nit, 8-bit-class panel cannot show HDR meaningfully — it just accepts the signal.
  • 1,000-plus nits is RTINGS' bar for good HDR peak brightness, where highlights genuinely pop.
  • Quoted "peak nits" overstate what you get. That figure is a brief flash on a small window; sustained full-screen brightness is far lower because of the Automatic Brightness Limiter (ABL), which dims large bright areas to protect the panel — it bites hardest in sustained bright content like a day cricket match.

"DOLBY VISION" ON A DIM PANEL STILL LOOKS DIM

Format support cannot buy brightness. Because every TV tone-maps to its own limits, a 300-nit set playing Dolby Vision still looks like a 300-nit TV. Dynamic metadata helps — most on budget sets — but physics wins. Treat brightness and black level as the real HDR specs, and format support as a secondary tie-breaker.

HDR formats: HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HLG

Once you have enough brightness to show HDR, the format decides how well the TV maps each scene. The key split is static versus dynamic metadata: HDR10 sets one brightness curve for a whole title, while HDR10+ and Dolby Vision adjust scene by scene.

Every HDR10+ or Dolby Vision title also ships with an HDR10 base layer, so an HDR10-only TV is never locked out of HDR — it only gives up the dynamic tone-mapping. The one brand rule to remember: Samsung backs HDR10+ and omits Dolby Vision, while LG and Sony do the opposite. Many others (TCL, Hisense, Panasonic) support both.

DYNAMIC METADATA MATTERS MORE ON A CHEAP TV

Dolby Vision and HDR10+ help most on budget and mid-range sets, whose brightness is furthest from the studio mastering monitor. On a flagship that already approaches those limits, the benefit shrinks. For India's mid-range-dominated market, that makes format support more valuable on a ₹35,000 TV than on a premium one.

What Indian streaming actually delivers

Netflix streams HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, with HDR10+ needing a Premium plan and a compatible device. Prime Video carries HDR10+ across its HDR catalogue. JioHotstar's premium tier streams in 4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on compatible devices. The practical lesson: pick a format your main services and any disc player actually use, then confirm the whole chain — including a soundbar or receiver in the path — passes it through.

Refresh rate and gaming: the spec-sheet minefield

This is the most booby-trapped part of a TV spec sheet, and it matters whether you game or not, because the tricks show up on ordinary sets too.

Ignore branded "motion" numbers

Most entry TVs put a fake "120" motion figure — Motion Rate, TruMotion, Motionflow and the like — on a 60Hz panel, specifically to look like a 120Hz set. Ignore any branded motion number entirely. Look for the native panel refresh rate in Hz, or an explicit "4K at 120Hz" claim, which is the only trustworthy 120Hz signal. Genuine 144Hz and even 165Hz panels now ship on some 2025-26 flagships, so a high native number can be real — just verify it is the panel, not the motion brand.

The "HDMI 2.1" loophole

The HDMI body deprecated HDMI 2.0, so a manufacturer can legally label a port "HDMI 2.1" while supporting none of the new features. HDMI 2.1 does not require full bandwidth, and features like eARC or VRR can run on older hardware. The practical test for a real high-bandwidth port is bandwidth above 18 Gbps, or explicit 4K-at-120 support on that specific port. Bandwidth alone is not everything either — implementation varies between models.

VRR, ALLM and input lag

  • Game Mode is the single most important setting — it bypasses processing. RTINGS calls under 15 ms at 4K60 good, the number most console gamers should care about.
  • A PS5 needs HDMI Forum VRR specifically (Xbox accepts both FreeSync and HDMI Forum VRR). Without full bandwidth, some TVs do 120Hz VRR only at 1080p and cap 4K at 60Hz.
  • A 120Hz panel gains nothing on 60fps content, which is what most Indian console and set-top viewing is — so do not overpay for 120Hz if you will not feed it.
  • Cables certify by bandwidth, not version. There is no "HDMI 2.1 cable"; look for "Ultra High Speed" certification for 4K120. A version-numbered cable listing is a red flag.

Smart platform: updates, ads and India specifics

The operating system decides how long your TV stays usable, and it is a genuine differentiator — but not in the way the demo in the shop suggests.

Update support is the real differentiator

Historically, proprietary TV systems got only bug-fix firmware and no OS upgrades, so apps ran poorly or vanished on sets only a few years old. That has improved: Samsung commits to seven years of Tizen upgrades on recent models, and LG to five years of webOS under its Re:New programme. But a crucial caveat — LG states plainly that a software upgrade never changes performance, features or durability. The chip and RAM you buy are what you keep, so an underpowered smart TV stays slow forever.

EVERY MAJOR PLATFORM SHOWS ADS

No smart TV that shows ads offers a setting to fully switch them off; the "opt out of personalized ads" toggle only swaps targeted ads for random ones. Platform-level ads can even arrive after purchase via an update. LG is the partial exception, now offering home and screen-saver promotion toggles. Ad load also varies by region, so in-store impressions may not match what you see at home.

India specifics

Fire TV has shipped built into Indian TVs since 2019, and its Alexa voice search supports English, Hindi and Hinglish — a real advantage over English-only voice platforms. One content note: app branding changed in 2025, so a current set surfaces JioHotstar (the JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar merger) and Amazon MX Player, not the old names.

Sound: wattage is not the spec

TV audio is the spec most often quoted uselessly. Advertised watts predict neither loudness nor quality. The physical reality is simple: thin TVs produce almost no bass — no thump or rumble — because slim cabinets cannot move enough air. Dolby's own soundbar paper concedes TV sound became "nearly unlistenable" as sets thinned.

The specs that actually predict sound are measured frequency response and low-frequency extension, not wattage — and TVs are rarely too quiet, they are thin and unclear. "Dolby Atmos" on a TV spec sheet means the set decodes Atmos and plays it through 2.0-channel speakers with virtualized height; the practical benefit is voice clarity more than immersion. If you care about sound, budget for a soundbar and treat the TV's own speakers as irrelevant to the choice.

ARC VS eARC — GET THIS RIGHT

Plain ARC carries stereo and compressed 5.1, and it does pass the lossy Dolby Atmos that Netflix and Prime stream. But eARC is required for lossless, high-bitrate audio — Dolby TrueHD Atmos, DTS:X, and Atmos-as-PCM from an Apple TV or Xbox. If you plan to add a soundbar, prefer an eARC TV, connect consoles and players directly to the TV, and let eARC send the audio back to the bar.

India: tax, star ratings and the satellite tuner

A few India-specific rules affect price, running cost and which features are mandatory. All were re-verified for this guide in August 2026.

  • 18% GST since 22 September 2025. TVs now carry a uniform 18% tax, down from 28% on sets above 32 inches — which is why large-screen prices dropped in late 2025.
  • BEE star labelling is mandatory for UHD TVs since 1 January 2026. The rating is set by annual energy consumption scaled to screen area, measured in the default out-of-box picture mode — so a bigger screen is allowed more consumption at the same star level. Compare stars only within the same BEE table.
  • The built-in satellite tuner (IS 18112) matters only for DD Free Dish. A TV with a DVB-S2 tuner receives free-to-air Doordarshan channels with just a dish and LNB, no set-top box. Mandatory compliance now falls on 26 January 2027. A household on DTH or OTT does not need it.

THE PANEL IS MOST OF THE TV'S VALUE

Because the panel is the bulk of a TV's cost and glued assembly makes repair impractical, an extended warranty is worth weighing on an expensive set. Samsung's Care+, as one documented example, covers screen malfunctions but explicitly excludes physical screen damage, and must be bought before the standard warranty ends. Read what any plan covers before assuming it protects a cracked panel — usually it does not.

The pattern to notice: the biggest quality jump per rupee is the step from the entry band into the QLED value band, where you first get genuine local dimming and real 120Hz. Above that, you are paying for brightness, processing and — at the top — the switch to self-emissive OLED.

OLED or QLED — which should I buy in 2026?

Buy OLED if you watch films and sport in a dimmer room and can afford it: self-emissive pixels give perfect blacks, no blooming and the fastest motion. Buy a good Mini-LED QLED if your room is bright, you want the most brightness for the money, or static content (news tickers, a PC desktop, game HUDs) is a big part of your viewing, because LCDs are effectively immune to burn-in. The real risk is sustained static content — hours of the same news ticker, a bright game HUD or a PC desktop left on screen — which produced permanent burn-in after 5,000-plus hours. Risk is cumulative and scales with brightness, so heavy static users should either lower OLED brightness or pick an LCD.

How do I know an "HDMI 2.1" port is real?

You cannot trust the label alone. The HDMI body deprecated HDMI 2.0, so a port can legally be called "HDMI 2.1" while supporting none of the new features. Which smart TV operating system is best?

They are more alike than different, so weigh two things. First, update support: Samsung now commits to seven years of Tizen upgrades and LG to five years of webOS, which keeps apps working on older sets — but a software update never speeds up weak hardware, so do not buy an underpowered smart TV expecting it to improve. Second, ads: every major platform shows home-screen ads and none lets you fully switch them off, though LG now offers partial promotion toggles. Do I need a TV with a built-in satellite tuner?

Only if you use DD Free Dish. A TV built to IS 18112 has a DVB-S2 satellite tuner, so free-to-air Doordarshan channels work with just a dish and LNB — no set-top box. If you are on a Tata Play, Airtel or Dish DTH subscription, or you stream everything, the built-in tuner is irrelevant to your purchase. Mandatory compliance for the standard now falls on 26 January 2027, so availability is expanding through 2026-27.
