Why we ranked on the 1-2 star reviews
Most 5-star smart lock reviews say nothing about the lock. In every brand we analysed, 50-80% of 5-star reviews are a line praising the installer, written on fitting day. One LAVNA LA24 buyer reports being pressured for a 5-star rating.
So we weighted the critical reviews and how recent they are. Lockouts, motor jams, battery drain and installers who never arrive count most. A lock with only a handful of India reviews is held near the field average, however clean its record looks.

Understanding Smart Lock Types
For an Indian main door, buy a mortise lock. It sits inside the door edge and throws its bolts into the frame.
- Mortise. The strongest option, and every lock on this page is one.
- Push-pull. A motorised mortise with no handle. It depends on the motor and battery.
- Rim. It bolts onto the inside of the door, which leaves the mechanism exposed.
- Certification. India's mortise lock standard, IS 16015 covers mechanically operated locks. None of the 47 smart lock listings we checked publishes a BIS mark.

Door Compatibility Guide
Measure your door before you order. Most main-door smart locks fit wooden doors 35-65 mm thick.
- Thickness. Doors outside a lock's range get refused at installation. Native installers have declined 75 mm doors.
- Material. Metal and aluminium doors need a lock that says so. The AIDO push-pull fits wood, metal and aluminium from 40 to 120 mm.
- Safety door. Check the gap to any grill or safety door that closes behind the main door.
Note thickness, material and that gap, then match them to each lock's door range.

Unlock Methods Explained
Fingerprint is table stakes. Pay extra for face unlock only if hands-free entry matters to you.
- Fingerprint. Fast, and on every lock here. Sensor type is almost never published, so do not chase it.
- 3D face and palm. Hands-free when you carry bags. It mostly comes on rechargeable camera models that need more charging.
- OTP and visitor codes. Let the maid or a delivery person in without sharing your PIN.
- Mechanical key. Non-negotiable. Every lock on this page has one.

Bluetooth, WiFi or a gateway
Bluetooth lets you manage users from your phone at the door. You need WiFi to see visitors or unlock from the office.
- Bluetooth. It works only near the door. The Bluetooth SIG range guide says real range depends on transmit power and obstacles.

- WiFi drains fast. Owners of camera models report 30-45 days per charge. The AAA-powered LAVNA LA28 claims up to 10 months.

Security Features to Look For
Bolts and the lock body matter more than encryption claims. "Military-grade" on a listing tells you nothing.
- Bolts. Five beat three, and three beat one. Stainless steel or SS304 beats zinc or aluminium.
- Privacy mode. An inside deadbolt or night latch blocks every outside code, including OTPs you shared.
- Auto-lock. The door locks itself when it closes.
- Tamper alarm. Look for a real alarm or app alert on forced attempts, not just a fake-PIN keypad.
