Inverter Technology Explained: What It Actually Saves
Inverter means variable speed, and the BEE gazette defines it as five or more capacity steps. What it saves, checked against real 2026 ISEER labels and prices.

Quick answer: what inverter technology means
- Inverter means variable speed. A circuit rebuilds the 50 Hz mains into a frequency it chooses, so the compressor or motor can run at any speed instead of only full blast or off.
- India has a legal definition. Gazette notification S.O. 2528(E) calls it a Variable Capacity Air Conditioner: capacity varied by five or more steps. Two steps is Two-Stage. Three or four is Multi-Stage.
- What it saves on a real label. The cheapest fixed-speed 1.5-ton split AC on Amazon India in August 2026 is rated 1,123 kWh a year. The best inverter model of the same size is rated 644 kWh — 43% less.
THE THING MOST PEOPLE GET WRONG
The word "inverter" on the box is not a rating. Two 1.5-ton inverter ACs both sold as 3-star sit 172 kWh a year apart. The number that matters is ISEER, printed on the BEE label.

What changed in 2026
- The split AC star table moved up on 1 January 2026. Five stars now needs ISEER 5.60 or higher. The old table, valid to 31 December 2025, gave five stars from 5.00 (Table 3.2(g), notification S.O. 2794(E)).
- Most models dropped a star overnight. Lloyd and Voltas listings now carry their own note that the printed rating is a 2025 rating and the product is one star lower under the 2026 guidelines.
- Inverter ACs lose the one-star option in 2028. Notification S.O. 3984(E) of 28 August 2025 bars two-stage, multi-stage and variable capacity ACs from the 1-star band for 2028 and 2029.
- Fixed-speed splits are still on sale, and no longer cheaper. A Daikin fixed-speed 1.5-ton listed at ₹42,500 in August 2026, above the same brand's inverter model at ₹37,490.
- Window ACs now come with inverters too, on a different scale. A 5-star inverter window AC is rated 1,050 kWh a year, more than a low-rated split.
- Washing machine labelling became mandatory on 1 January 2024. The label rates kWh per kg per cycle, and says nothing about whether the motor is an inverter type.

The word "inverter" means three different things in India
An inverter is any circuit that turns DC into AC. What it does next is the part that changes.

WHY THE CONFUSION IS SO COMMON
Both names are technically correct. A home battery inverter and an inverter AC both contain a circuit converting DC to AC. The engineering word is the same; the purpose is not.
Only one of them varies frequency. A backup inverter must output a steady 50 Hz, because your fan and tubelight expect it. An appliance drive deliberately outputs anything from a few hertz upward.
An inverter AC is not a battery AC. It still needs mains power. A 1.5-ton unit averages around 420 W across a cooling season on a good label, and peaks far higher — beyond an ordinary home inverter.

How an inverter drive actually works
The drive throws away the grid frequency and builds a new one, because motor speed follows frequency.

A large capacitor holds a steady DC voltage. This reservoir is why supply dips matter less.

Averaged out, those pulses look like AC at whatever frequency the controller picked. The motor follows it.
THREE DETAILS WORTH KNOWING
The compressor motor is usually a permanent-magnet motor, not the induction motor a fixed-speed unit uses. It is the same family as a BLDC ceiling fan, scaled up and sealed inside the compressor shell.
The expansion valve usually becomes electronic too. A fixed orifice cannot follow a compressor that changes speed, so variable-speed systems pair the drive with a motor-driven valve that meters refrigerant to match.
"Dual Inverter" does not mean two inverters. LG's own explanation is that its Dual Inverter compressor is a twin rotary design — two cylinders, two rollers, two vanes. The name describes the compressor, not the electronics.

What India legally counts as an inverter
Notification S.O. 2528(E) defines four kinds of air conditioner by how many capacity steps they have. The marketing word covers all four.

- The label does not print the category. The BEE label shows stars, ISEER and annual units. It does not say whether you bought a two-stage machine or a genuinely variable one.
- The rating method tests only two points. S.O. 2528(E) requires testing at full capacity and at 50% of full capacity, with the manufacturer declaring the frequency used for the 50% test.
- Minimum-load performance is not counted. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory notes ISEER follows ISO 16358 but does not consider minimum-load operation. The slowest crawl an inverter can do is untested.

Why variable speed saves energy
The real reason is thermodynamics, not startup surge. Slowing a compressor makes the heat exchangers look bigger, and a bigger heat exchanger is a more efficient one.

Part load raises efficiency — the big one
At half speed, the same coils handle half the heat. Refrigerant evaporates warmer and condenses cooler, so the compressor works across a smaller pressure gap and draws less power per unit of cooling.

No cycling losses — the measurable one
ISO 16358-1 applies a cyclic degradation coefficient to fixed-capacity machines, defaulting to 0.25. There is no such coefficient for a variable-capacity unit, because it modulates rather than cycles.

Startup surge — the tiny one
Inrush current is large but lasts a fraction of a second. It stresses the motor and the wiring. As a share of a season's kilowatt-hours it is close to nothing.
WHAT "CYCLING LOSS" ACTUALLY IS
When a fixed-speed unit stops: pressures equalise across the system, refrigerant migrates out of the coil, the coil warms back toward room temperature, and condensate on the fins re-evaporates.
When it starts again: it must rebuild that pressure difference first, so useful cooling lags the power draw, and the moisture goes back into the room. Repeat ten or more times an hour.

Best inverter against cheapest fixed speed: 43% less
1,123.23 kWh against 644.41 kWh is a gap of 478.82 units a year. At ₹8 a unit that is about ₹3,830 a year. Substitute your own slab rate, because tariffs vary by state and by usage.

The drive alone is worth less than that
Berkeley Lab cites Indian research putting the fixed-to-inverter switch at 21–26% saved. The rest of the 43% comes from better coils, better compressors and R-32 in the newer units.

Two "3-star inverter" ACs, 172 units apart
Lloyd at 941.76 kWh and LG at 769.55 kWh were both on sale as 3-star 1.5-ton inverter models. That gap is roughly ₹1,378 a year at ₹8 a unit.

Divide by 1,600 to get the average watts
ISEER assumes 1,600 cooling hours a year. So 671.15 kWh is about 420 W averaged over the season. The fixed-speed unit averages about 702 W.

ISEER and units per year do not rank identically
The IFB at ISEER 5.65 is rated fewer units than the LG at 5.77. ISEER measures efficiency, annual units measure consumption, and a "1.5 ton" label covers a range of rated capacities. Buy on units.

The 2026 star table, and why your AC lost a star
There has been no separate inverter table since January 2018. Fixed speed and variable speed are rated on the same scale.

- A 2025 five-star is usually a 2026 four-star. A Voltas model at ISEER 5.00 and a Lloyd at 5.20 both carried five stars in 2025. Both fall in the 2026 four-star band, and their own listings say so.
- Check the label validity dates, not just the stars. Old stock still carries the old label. One Voltas listing prints "BEE Label Validity Period: 1st July 2022 – 31st Dec 2025" alongside a five-star claim.
- Look up the ISEER yourself. It is on every listing and every label. Find it in the 2026 column above — that is the rating, whatever the star graphic shows.
- Window ACs use a different scale entirely. A five-star window AC needs ISEER 3.70; a five-star split needs 5.60. A 1.5-ton five-star inverter window AC was rated 1,050 kWh a year, more than several low-rated splits.
- In 2028 the bar moves again. Five stars will need ISEER 5.80, and inverter ACs will be barred from the one-star band. Fixed-speed splits will be the only machines allowed to sit at the bottom.

Inverter technology in other appliances
The compressor is the whole story in a fridge. In a washing machine it is a small part of the bill.
REFRIGERATORS
Real, but already in the kWh number
Take two frost-free inverter models of almost the same size in August 2026. A 235 L is rated 228 units a year at 2 stars; a 236 L is rated 200 units at 3 stars. Both say inverter on the box.
WASHING MACHINES
The heater dominates, not the motor
The BEE label rates kWh per kg per cycle. Front loaders are tested on a 60-degree cotton programme, top loaders on 30 degrees. Most of the difference is heating water.
CEILING FANS
The word used is usually BLDC
Same principle, different name. A board switches a permanent-magnet motor instead of a regulator throttling an induction motor. BEE rates fans on service value, not watts.
MICROWAVES
Not an energy feature at all
Panasonic's own explanation is that a conventional magnetron only runs at full power, so lower settings pulse it on and off. An inverter supply holds a steady lower power instead.
FIVE-STAR FRONT LOADERS, ALL WITH INVERTER MOTORS
IFB 7 kg at 0.045 kWh/kg/cycle, Samsung 9 kg at 0.05, IFB 6 kg at 0.050, IFB 8 kg at 0.057, LG 7 kg at 0.06.
Five stars is anything at or below 0.07, and all five clear it comfortably. All five have inverter or BLDC motors — so the motor is not what separates them. Wash temperature and load size are.

Myths and reality
Every one of these is on a live product listing or a shop-floor script right now.
FIVE CLAIMS THAT DO NOT SURVIVE THE LABEL
- "Inverter saves 30–50% electricity." Quoted against no stated baseline. One fridge listing claims a digital inverter compressor uses "50% less power" on a model whose label reads 200 units a year.
- "Inverter ACs cost more." In August 2026 a Daikin fixed-speed 1.5-ton listed at ₹42,500 while the same brand's inverter model listed at ₹37,490.
- "Inverter means five stars." Inverter models are on sale at ISEER 3.95, which is two stars under the 2026 table. Fixed-speed models reach 3.90.
- "Never switch an inverter AC off." It is designed to modulate, not to run forever. Leaving an empty room cooled costs more than the restart saves.
- "An inverter AC runs on a home inverter." Different device. The AC still draws mains power, hundreds of watts on average and far more on a hot afternoon.
WHAT IS ACTUALLY TRUE
- The annual units figure on the label already includes whatever the inverter contributes. Compare that, not the badge.
- Price now tracks ISEER and features, not the drive. Fixed-speed models are a shrinking niche, not a discount.
- Star level is set by the whole machine — coils, fan, refrigerant, compressor and drive together.
- Modulation helps when the room is near setpoint. It cannot help a room nobody is in.
- Backup inverters and appliance drives share a name and nothing else that matters to a buyer.

When inverter technology saves less than promised
Part-load savings need part load. An inverter that never gets to slow down is just an expensive fixed-speed machine.

Very hot climates
Berkeley Lab notes inverter ACs may save less in percentage terms in hot climates, because there are fewer hours of part-load operation. A Nagpur May is not a Bengaluru October.

An undersized unit
Put a 1-ton AC in a room that needs 1.5 tons and it will sit at maximum speed for hours. There is no modulation left to harvest.

Short bursts of use
Half an hour before bed is mostly pull-down, which is full-speed work. The savings live in the long steady hours afterwards.

A leaky room
An open door, an uninsulated west wall or a gap under the door keeps the heat load high. The compressor never gets to drop to a low speed.

A setpoint you keep overriding
Every star-labelled room AC has defaulted to 24 degrees since 1 January 2020. Dropping it to 18 every night undoes a large part of what the label promises.

The trade-offs nobody puts on the box
You added a computer to a compressor. That is why every warranty in the category names the board separately.

READ THE WARRANTY STRUCTURE — IT IS A CONFESSION
The standard split is 1, 5 and 10. One year comprehensive, five years on the PCB, ten on the compressor. LG, Daikin, Voltas, IFB, Lloyd and Carrier all listed exactly that in August 2026.
The board gets its own clause for a reason. Nobody writes a separate five-year warranty for the capillary tube. The industry is telling you which part it expects to replace.
Watch the dated promotional riders. Samsung's 20-year inverter warranty applied only to purchases up to 31 March 2026, though the bullet was still showing on listings in August. You get ten years now.

Six numbers, in order of importance. All six are printed on the BEE label or the listing, and none of them is the word inverter.

Frequently asked questions
What is inverter technology in simple terms?
A circuit that rebuilds mains electricity at a frequency of its choosing, so a motor can run at any speed. In an appliance, that lets the compressor match the cooling the room actually needs instead of switching between full power and off.
How much does an inverter AC really save?
Research cited by Berkeley Lab puts the switch from fixed speed to inverter at 21 to 26% for India. Comparing today's cheapest fixed-speed 1.5-ton against today's most efficient inverter model gives about 43%, but that gap includes better coils and a better refrigerant, not just the drive.
Is an inverter AC the same as a home inverter?
No. A home inverter is a battery backup outputting a fixed 50 Hz to run your house during a cut. An inverter AC uses the same conversion idea to vary compressor speed. It still runs on mains and will not run itself from a battery.
Why did my 5-star AC become a 4-star in 2026?
The table changed, not the machine. From 1 January 2026 a split AC needs ISEER 5.60 for five stars, up from 5.00. Anything between 5.00 and 5.59 is now four stars. Several brands print this warning on their own listings.
Should I leave an inverter AC running all day?
No. That advice comes from the idea that restarts are expensive, and for an inverter they are not. Cooling an empty room for hours costs far more than one restart. Switch it off when you leave for a long stretch.
Does an inverter AC need a voltage stabiliser?
Often not, because the DC link inside the drive absorbs a lot of variation. But the exemption is only as wide as the voltage range the brand declares in writing. Read that range and compare it against what your supply actually does.
Is "digital inverter" or "dual inverter" better than plain inverter?
Those are brand names, not grades. Samsung calls its version Digital Inverter; LG's Dual Inverter describes a twin rotary compressor. Neither is defined in the gazette. ISEER and the annual units figure are.
Is an inverter refrigerator worth paying extra for?
Only if its annual units figure is lower. Nearly every frost-free fridge sold in India now has an inverter compressor, including models rated two stars. Compare kWh per year for the same volume and ignore the compressor name.
Can you still buy a fixed-speed split AC in India?
Yes, though they are a small share. It fell from 99% in 2015-16 to 23% in 2022-23 according to the Ministry of Power. The ones on sale in 2026 sit around ISEER 3.55 to 3.90, which is one or two stars.
Do inverter appliances break down more often?
There is no public failure-rate data in India to settle this. What is visible is that every brand warrants the control board separately, usually for five years, and that a board replacement is a brand-priced part rather than a generic one.
BOTTOM LINE
Inverter technology is real engineering, and on an air conditioner it is worth a large fraction of the bill. But it is now the default, not a differentiator — almost everything sold in India already has it.
So stop shopping for the word. Read the annual units figure and the ISEER, look the ISEER up in the 2026 table, and buy the lower number.
